Len Roberts
Len Roberts grew up in South Dakota. After he finished college, he joined the Air Force and served as a pilot for 23 years, including time in Vietnam and in Spain. As Len and his family moved around, houses were bought, fixed up, and sold. This included remodeling and building a maple kitchen in a 1952 colonial home in Maryland. He learned how to make the kitchen from Air Force sergeants who worked on Air Force One cabinets and who worked part-time in the base wood hobby shop. After his Air Force career, Len taught high school AFJROTC for nine years, then worked eleven years for the San Francisco VA as an administrator in the National Remoting Monitoring Program, serving veterans with implanted pacemakers and defibrillators.
In 2009, Len’s son Mike taught him how to turn a walnut bowl, and Len was hooked. Len has turned many bowls, spindles for chairs, segmented urns, and other wooden items. An arborist friend gives him wood from various downed Texas trees. This supply of wood keeps Len turning and creating new wooden designs.
Len lives in San Antonio with his wife Marcia and in the same neighborhood as Mike, Erin, and Hannah. He is a member of the Alamo Chapter of the Wood Turning Association.
