Nancy Hall
Nancy Hall was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Memphis.
During her life Nancy, like many artists, not only spent time creating her own artworks, but also maintained a 'day job'. For Nancy, this meant various jobs in the art field, with most of her working career spent at one of the largest fine-art supply houses in the Mid-South.
Over the years, as Nancy extended and refined her technique and her selection of subject matter, she participated in numerous group shows and juried competititons in Mamphis and the surrounding area- events at which she achieved much recognition.
Nancy had became quite well known locally before she moved from Memphis to San Antonio to be closer to family and in preparation for her retirement. Since that milestone, she has been able to devote most of her time to family, volunteer work, and her art.
As Nancy herself tells us:
|
"My first inspirations were landscapes, and in rendering them I was much influenced by George Inness, Winslow Homer, and John Henry Twachtman. I enjoy expressing the beauty of landscape scenes, rendering them in colored pencil, charcoal, acrylic, and watercolor. What draws me to landscapes, and what has become my goal in depicting them, is the sense of peace and stillness that they possess, and I always hope that this comes through in my work. I also try to look for scenes that are not necessarily noticed by others; I find that it is these visual 'hidden jewels' that are particularly fulfilling to translate onto paper or canvas.
In recent years, though, I have become interested more and more in the less realistic, more abstract nature of what I see around me, and in this I have been influenced by Kurt Schwitters and his amazing collages; these have had a lasting impression on my evolution as an artist. Thinking about this abstract quality of scenes and objects has become quite fascinating. In collages, I find myself challenged to find the 'right fit' as I use paper materials and other elements that do not necessarily relate to one another yet must somehow be organized into my composition. The same challenge faces me when I depict the abstract essence of what I see around me." |
