"This collage was originally going to be called "Stacks"- for obvious reasons. It is indeed like a tall stack of books, turned different ways to prevent them from toppling over. And it was inspired by the stacks at a library, those backroom storage areas where many of the best goodies for reading and research are to be found. It was renamed "Totem" by an art collector, and that fits better, I think, and has more universal connotations. A totem has texture, carvings and history...and is a record and testament to shared experiences and humanity, which is what books provide us."
